Basic modelling guide, by Ricardo Rodríguez: F-104 1/72. (CHAPTER 9)

THE FINAL WHITE COAT / CAPA FINAL DE BLANCO

Of the six areas of light that I identified in the picture, I made a reduction so that the painting was not of the colour of the shadows, but a reinforcement of the actual lighting. Thus eliminating the darker tone, I still have five colours. One of them is pure white and the other four are mixtures.
The following table shows the used colours. I made two mixtures: C and E and then I got the other shades by mixing A, C and E.
As I made abundant mixtures I consumed the whole Tamiya lacquer spray. So for airbrushing the A colour on the model I used MrColor white lacquer which as I said, works just as well.

All lacquer paints I use are diluted about 50% with thinner. This means that the layers are quite transparent.
To achieve a smooth and glossy finish with this painting, I follow these rules:
-Pressure relatively low
-Paint flow not too thin
-Slow passes
-Short distance from the airbrush to the model
This way I prevent the paint from reaching the surface too dry or in small amount, so it has got time enough to get smooth.
The trick is to observe the reflection of light on the surface we are painting. We must airbrush at a speed such that the surface get shiny. This will mean that the surface is wet enough with liquid paint. But you must not flood the surface.
The first colour applied was B, the shade of vertical surfaces.
[linked image]

I used masking tape to apply it on the tail fin.
[linked image]

Next I airbrushed the two hard shadows on the under surface using the darker colour E for the middle zone. And, as the things don´t always work as planned, I realised that the preshading had almost disappeared.
[linked image]

So I shaded again the under-surface and applied a thin layer of D and E colours. Now the result is perfect.
[linked image]

Colour C is to lighten the shadows of the vertical under-surface zones. The angles are very interesting when painting with zenithal light due to the contrast they create. There are few angles as the formed by the belly fin with the fuselage.
[linked image]

And this is the final result of the shadowed white colour of the under-surface, where the preshading contrast must be harder.
[linked image]

Spraying the white paint to enhance the zenithal light effect is very easy and requires no masking. The A colour (Mr.Color white) is sprayed just from above letting the paint to cover the same way as the light would. This way we don´t need to guess the light demarcations. We just lighten with the airbrush.
Thanks to the transparency of diluted A colour I covered the preshading until I got the attenuation I wanted, uniformly along the surface. Very easy.
[linked image]

Preshading is technically simple. In fact it is a simplification with fewer risks of shading. It may have born as an attempt to correct mistakes or imbalances of shading.
The only important thing is to get a balanced attenuation not to lose the effect. And make it uniform.
[linked image]

These lacquer paints dry pretty fast. They are the only ones which I venture to work on the same day of applying. If you paint in the morning, you can polish them in the evening.
Again I used sandpaper of 6000-8000 grain to polish some slightly rough surface and small fibres stuck to the paint. As I have said before, these small imperfections are very visible on a glossy white finish.
[linked image]

I discovered that once the Tamiya spray was apparently empty there was still much paint inside. I rescued the spray from the trash and opened it (empty of gas, of course) with pliers. Inside there was enough paint to fill a bottle and two balls of glass to remove the paint. A small treasure.
In the future I plan to remove all the paint from the new sprays and put it into bottles. Of course, first you must empty the gas by spraying with the can upside down.
[linked image]

As I explained, the bottom shadow of the tail planes is not the darkest of them due to the indirect lighting received from below.
Even so, the contrast between both sides is strong. To imitate zenithal light with a nice effect you must be aggressive with the tones.
In any case it is physically impossible to see at the same time both sides of this piece, as well as many other pieces painted this way. The contrast that we must focus are the more visible, those that combine vertical with horizontal surfaces.
[linked image]

In any other case I would have retouched the sides of the fuselage with colour C, to improve the gradient of light in that area. But I saved this work because in this scheme the fuselage sides will be painted in another colour.
[linked image]

ADHESIVE MASKING / MASCARILLAS ADHESIVAS

The NASA blue stripe is the biggest problem in this scheme. I chose to use a type of tape more rigid than Tamiya´s, of a slightly plastic material, because it curves far less than the paper ones. This would be a disadvantage in other surfaces, but here it helps the edges not being wavy.
It is a tape of 1.5 mm wide. Narrow tapes are better to edge borders. The decision of using this tape gave me some unexpected problems when removing the masking. I´ll explain it later.
[linked image]

Placing the tape is tricky because the fuselage has got many curves. The blue stripe must have a uniform width seen from the sides. This means curving the tape looking for the correct effect. The hardest thing is the first mask for which there is no reference.
I did my best.
[linked image]

Luckily it is a tape that accepts being paced many times. I was close to lose my patience.
[linked image]

In addition to cleanness, to which I have already referred to prevent contamination of the edges, working with tapes requires a good tip tweezers, scissors and cutter. All clean and sharp.
Tamiya´s cutting pad has a very rough surface ideal for cutting and easily removing the adhesive tape.
[linked image]

After the bordering tape I use a wider tape to widen the masking. With this 6 mm tape I mask the complicated areas, as the air intakes. This masking must be so well adhered as the bordering tape because it will receive the higher pressure of the airbrush.
[linked image]

And with thick 18 mm tape we end the mummification of the model. From my experience I know that it is preferable to spend tape that crying later, so I covered the whole model. The airbrushed paint can slip through the most unexpected gap and stain the model.
[linked image]

Placing the tape to protect areas is not as trivial as it may seem. After sticking the tape we will have to remove it and there are ways to facilitate this, reducing risks for the model. The point is to avoid the sticky sides of the tape to join each other.
You always must apply it so that the end is set on a non-adhesive surface. This way we won´t need to cut or tear off the tape in order to remove it.
[linked image]

[linked image]

Now I introduce other method of cutting adhesive masks. There are thermal cutters for adhesive plastic sheet which are basically a low-power soldering iron. They have just the temperature enough so that the conical point cut the plastic material without over-melting it. They are extremely easy to use and very cheap. I work with it over a glass.
[linked image]

Its advantage is the ease which you can cut freehand curved lines, and the precision of cutting using templates. Of course, you always must use a template a bit bigger than the dimension you need, because the point removes some material.
There is a range of diameters between the minimum cut of the cutting compass and the maximum of the circular puncher where is a problem cutting a circular mask. This tool offers a solution.
[linked image]

I needed these round masks to protect the zones where the NASA decals will be placed. By precaution I decided not to place the decals over the blue stripe because they are bigger than the stripes, and the contrast between blue and white is very strong so it might be appreciated through the decal. This effect often happens with thin light coloured decals.
This adhesive plastic sheet is not an ideal material for masking in modelling due to its rigidity, low adhesion and tendency to leave traces of adhesive on the surface. But it has got certain unique characteristics that may be necessary sometimes.
[linked image]

I made the blue with a mixture of Gunze Aqueous blues diluted with MrColor Leveling Thinner. This paint is a semi-lacquer; it has the airbrushing behaviour and the finish of a lacquer but the drying time is longer, and the curing time much longer. So we should use gloves whenever we manipulate a model painted with this paint. At least until it is sealed with varnish or Future.
The tone of blue that we perceive when watching the plane is conditioned by the surrounding white colour, this produces an effect of simultaneous contrast.
In a photo, a real plane or a model we do not see the real colour, what we perceive is a colour in relation to its environment. The white environment leads us to perceive a darker blue than the actual tone. If I had used the eye-perceived blue colour in the model, after removing the masks the surrounding white of the model would lead us to perceive the blue as even darker.
So I made a mixture a little lighter than the perceived blue tone.
[linked image]

Of course, I also preshaded the blue but only in the vertical panel lines.
[linked image]

And then I apply the second layer of paint to modulate the preshading, with the light mixture above and dark blue below.
[linked image]

The reason of this gradient is to match the blue stripe with the zenithal light painting of the plane. This way the top must be more illuminated than the bottom.
[linked image]

The blue stripe has got golden borders, a colour hardly used in model aviation.
The logical thing is to harness the exterior masking and add the inner one. The difficulty here lies in achieving a uniform width.
The decal sheet provides these golden lines, but I have creepy feelings with fine line decals.
[linked image]

Alclad II paints are also lacquers that don´t need dilution. I used Pale Gold colour.
The Alclad II paint range has great resistance and a very fast drying. And the base of glossy dark blue works properly.
[linked image]

When removing the masking we must be cautious, no rush to see the result. It is better to remove the pieces of tape one by one, beginning by the upper ones.
The masks are always a potential risk for the model since sometimes the paint doesn´t stick well to the model in some point. Removing the masking tape too quick may cause the paint to chip somewhere.
[linked image]

And if the paint chips, don´t be discouraged. It is usual that during the painting phase we get through some crisis when things don´t go as expected.
Best thing is to give a break to dispel frustration and think coldly the best way to correct the problem. Correction jobs often require some effort so it is good to restore the mood before undertake them.
When the problem is confined to a panel, it is very easy to repaint it.
[linked image]

As I said before, the tape I used to mask the edges left some disgusting souvenirs: many leaks, remnants of adhesive and a pair of paint chips.
Leaks of paint under the tape were caused by the high fluidity of the diluted Gunze Aqueous paint. I have used this tape before with Vallejo Model Air paints and I had no problem.
The border of the golden stripe masked with Tamiya tape was perfect. The conclusion is to use the type of masking tape according to the type of paint used.
These leaks are not difficult to remove, especially when we have a base of glossy lacquer. Using below more resistant paints than above has nothing but advantages.
With toothpicks we can easily retouch the borders. The tip can remove with precision and the wood texture can sand the imperfections. It is important to rub gently, patiently, and counting with many toothpicks.

[linked image]

Tenacity has painted many models. This retouches where not difficult to do, but very boring.
[linked image]

The plastic masking sheet used for the circles always leaves some residue.
A nice product for removing the adhesive remains is the foam-safe cyanoacrylate accelerator. I did a test on the B-17´s wing but the accelerator damaged the white paint although not the blue.
So I used the plan B. I used masking tape to remove these adhesive residues.
[linked image]

And finally some brush retouching. As long as lacquer paints are not good for brush painting, I used Vallejo mixed with Medea, Gunze aqueous diluted with water and Golden marker diluted with enamel thinner. Like every metallic marker, the golden one is the very best in terms of grain and resistance.
[linked image]

And this is the work so far. I have overcome the masking tape problems and I am satisfied with the result. In the next chapter I´ll finish the painting and place de decals. It´ll be far more amusing than this one.

Basic modelling guide, by Ricardo Rodríguez: F-104 1/72. (CHAPTER 8)

PAINTING PHASE / FASE DE PINTURA:

Of course, the key factors in this stage are the paints. There are many types, different drying times, incompatibilities and order of application.
First of all I must introduce the project. The project, or we could call it the concept, much determines how the painting will be. In this case the project focuses on making an F-104 that is not a plane but a monument. That’s why this model has no nozzle and the canopy is closed.
The subject is this retired F-104N, flown by Neil Armstrong and exhibited in the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University campus, Prescott, Arizona.
In addition to the small details of colour in some parts that do not apply to operating aircraft, making a model that captures the essence of this 104, requires a clean, new and glossy paint.
In general, conceiving a project based on a particular plane or colour scheme that we like is reason enough. But in most cases we have freedom to enrich the project by adding an original touch (which can be fantastic or realistic), experimenting with painting, or daring with scratch. It is a pity when we lose the chance to think outside the box.

PREPARING TO PAINT / PREPARANDONOS PARA PINTAR:

The first thing is to clean the work area. Air flows or dusty places are not advisable for painting models.
Order in the workspace is also important. The painting requires an environment safer and wider, without the risk of hitting the model with such elements as a lamp or a bottle; where we can prepare the paint mixes or clean the airbrush without splashing the model; and where everything is within the reach of the hand.
I gather all the paints that I´m going to use and put them in an empty box. It is important to check the good condition of the paints.

The thinners are also very important.
I have been using lacquer paints for some years. I really like their resistance and smooth finish. And I think they are the best choice for a smooth and glossy paint. Of course, lacquer paints as Tamiya spray or Gunze Mr.Color must be diluted with lacquer thinners, not with water. Other lacquer paints as Alclad are already diluted about 90% in their containers.
For all non-acrylic paints, and especially lacquers, you must have good ventilation and an appropriate respiratory protection as a carbon filter mask. These products are harmful in the long term.
The glove is not to protect the hand but the painting. A characteristic of the lacquer paints is that the fingerprints will be marked on the paint even several days before the application although the paint seems perfectly dry. That´s the difference between "drying" and "curing" time.  Using a glove to manipulate the model avoids any problem.
[linked image]

Painting with the airbrush requires several elements to mix the paints, dilute large quantities, transfer paints between containers and clean the brushes. Everything is quite cheap and lasting. The eyedroppers are available in pharmacies and they are perfect for transferring paint and measure mixtures. Small steel or glass jars are available in stores and serve to dilute, mix and clean the paint and tools.

Before we begin painting, it is advisable to make an airbrush inspection in case that it needs cleaning or oiling.
I use lots of acetone for cleaning. For airbrushes that have sensitive rubber sealing there specific airbrush cleaning products, which are less aggressive.
The airbrush cleaning is very important. From periodical rinsing between paint reloads spraying a little of acetone, to the complete disassembly at the end of each session.
The tools that I consider essential for a deep cleaning are the hard bristle brush, the cotton bud, the interdental brush and the deburring needle. I use them in that order because each one manages to access where the former cannot.

When we prepare a paint mixture we must prepare enough for the whole model and for possible retouches. That mixture must be kept in good conditions at least until we finish the model. I use small bottles with dropper purchased at the pharmacy. They have a rubber seal and resist any solvent. They are also reusable. We also can recycle the paint jars.

I know two pure lacquer paints for modelling: MrColor and Tamiya spray. TS and AS Tamiya ranges are excellent airbrushing paints. The problem is to move the paint from the can to the airbrush. I use a valve with a cannula that I took from a lubricant spray.
When the paint leaves the can it has got dissolved propellant so we must let it breathe before use it. For a new spray can I discovered that we must leave the paint overnight to release all the propellant. To shake the paint before the release of the propellant causes sudden eruptions of foam!
I chose a gloss white spray from Tamiya to paint the overall colour of the model.

I use a B-17 wing as a test subject for painting. This wing has a colour and a type of plastic identical to the Starfighter kit.
When I try a new technique I always work first in the test wing, and if the result is satisfactory I do it in the model. This test bench works for many things: behaviour of paints and varnishes, performance of the airbrush, appropriate pressure, times of drying, colour test, behaviour of decals, etc.

Whenever is possible we must find a way to attach the model to some kind of handle.
It is not always easy or possible. This time I found a nice and easy way to do it with a piece of foam and a wooden stick.

APPROACH TO THE PAINTING: ZENITHAL LIGHT
PLANTEAMIENTO DE LA PINTURA: LUZ CENITAL

I've been experimenting with the zenithal light for a couple of years and I still have much to discover. What began as an experiment has finished changing my perception of modelling. Now I do not conceive painting a model without some shading to enhance the light effect, at least in the cases where it can be effective.
I remember the figures painting before the zenithal light. One day it appeared and it wiped out everything in an instant. The airplanes are a very different thing and the aviation modellers have other mentality. I don´t think that zenithal light will have much success or popularity in aviation modelling.
Anyway, when I find in front of such a clean and glossy subject I need to complicate the painting in order not to get bored to death.
The zenithal light is one of the least artificial techniques that we can imagine. We only need to observe the reality.
In the next picture I have extracted with Photoshop the variations of the white colour observed in different areas of the aircraft when the lighting is zenithal. The pure white (A) covers the aircraft above the blue strip, except the tail fin that is light grey (B). The stabilizer under-surface is in shadow, but its high position makes to receive reflected light from the fuselage (C), so it has a shade lighter than the fuselage below the blue stripe (E). The lower vertical surfaces receive diffuse lighting from the sky so they have a lighter shade (D) than the more horizontal surfaces of the belly and the under-wing, where the shadow is higher (F). All the surfaces receive coloured light reflected by the blue sky or the beige ground, so the colour of the aircraft is not neutral. I've desaturated the colour samples in the pictures because I am not going to reproduce these effect in the painting, and will prepare the mixtures only with black and white.

The base paint is important for 3 reasons.
First because we need a primer that properly grips to the plastic or resin. Even if the plastic surface has been washed, it is not the best surface for some paints, as the acrylic, to grip.
Lacquer or enamel paints are good base paints because they stick strongly to the plastic, so the probability of chipping when removing the masking is unlikely.
But the lacquer paint is the best because it is chemically more resistant than enamel.
Mr.Surfacer 1200 is a very fine lacquer with a satin finish that allows a good grip to the paint airbrushed over it. Any other light Gunze lacquer paint should work too.
[linked image]

Secondly because the priming can discover some defect on the surface, imperceptible with the bare plastic. If some imperfection appears we can putty and sand before priming again. The priming must have a finish as smooth as the plastic and if at some point the finish is rough I sand and polish until getting a very smooth and satin finish.
I masked the contact points of landing gear parts before painting. Painted pieces do not allow a wielding so strong between pieces as the bare plastic. We could also have fitting problems in certain pieces by thickening due to the several paint layers.
[linked image]

And third, because it also works to unify the surface colours. The airbrush paints use to be quite translucent, especially light colours, and is not advisable to apply thick layers of paint for the sole purpose of achieving a uniform finish. Mr. Surfacer primer quickly covers the black markings of the cyanoacrylate and has got a tone next to the original plastic colour, so with a very fine general layer and insisting only on the black puttied zones, we quickly get a uniform surface.
In short, if the colour of the plastic is dark and the colour of the paint scheme is very light, it is worth using primer. In other cases the same base paint can work as primer if it is lacquer or enamel paint.
I let the primer to dry overnight. That is enough time.

In order to test the paint I did a couple of mixes. The pure white Tamiya spray is of course the colour (A). I mixed the colour (C) with Tamiya´s gloss black and white and colour (E) with a mixture of MrColor.
I didn´t appreciate any difference in quality or drying time. Both lacquers settle quickly while preserving fluidity for a few minutes, allowing the paint to smooth by itself. Either Tamiya or Gunze paints dries to the touch within a few hours, but I always wait at least one day before working with pieces painted with these paints.
I have used the specific thinner for each lacquer. Lacquer paints are airbrushed perfectly up to 50% of solvent.
The objective of zenithal light painting is to reinforce the natural light effect. Part of the shadow contrast is imitated with paint and the rest are the natural lighting effect.
The contrast between light and shadows in a real plane are higher than in a scale model under the same lighting conditions. A possible cause may be the less distance from the model to the ground, which reflects some light to the under-surface. Other reason is that the sun is a more powerful light source than our home lights, so big objects under the sunlight have more light contrast than small objects under a home lighting.
Reinforcing this contrast with paint techniques makes the model to improve the realism and increase the perceived size.
So I will use the mixture (E) for painting (F) areas, mixture (C) for (E) areas, and white (A) for (A) areas. I have included in the picture of MrColor paints a glass marble which I put in the bottles of Gunze and Tamiya to help stir the paint.

PRESHADING / PRESOMBREADO:

Many people make the preshading directly over the plastic or the primer. I understand that it is an effect to be applied over a paint coat, and then softened by spraying more paint over it to achieve the desired effect.
I think it is better to paint the preshading as an intermediate layer. This way, the first coat of paint provides a base for the final colour that the second layer completes, with the preshading between both.
If you preshade before painting a base coat may happens that when you has managed to get the desired colour on the model, the density of the layers of paint is such that the preshading has almost disappeared.
I therefore began by a first thin coat of white base paint.

I used the colour white (A) in the upper half and the mix (C) in the lower half. That is a simplification of what will be the zenithal painting. It is enough at the moment.

After a day of drying I faced the great problem of painting glossy models: the surface.
Gloss surfaces are simply smoother than flat surfaces. Everything is matter of the surface texture of the paint. If we polish a flat surface, it will become glossy. And it is always much easier to cover with flat paint a glossy surface than the opposite. The best to make a layer of paint or varnish perfectly glossy is that the previous layer is very smooth and shiny.
And the rough surfaces are hard to smooth with paint. So I polished the surface sanding with grains from 4000 to 8000 where there appeared orange skin effect.
Lacquer paints are wonderfully sanded and due to the employed grains, the sanding does not pass through the layer of paint.
[linked image]

The most insidious factor is the dust particles and fibres that float in the air. If the painting had a flat finish, it would be mostly invisible. But in a glossy finish they are very noticeable, so must be eliminated with the sandpaper. It is really easy.
[linked image]

The preshading is not an easy technique for an airbrush clumsy like me. First I practiced with the B-17´s wing to find the right distance and pressure. Moreover, it was the first time I preshaded with these paints and this airbrush.
[linked image]

First I masked the tail fin and wings because trying to do the whole preshading at the same time it seemed difficult to me at first thought.
For this preshading I used Blue Gray Smoke from Medea COM.ART acrylic colours. It is like using airbrush inks but with a faster drying and without the problem of spider legs. I applied this paint undiluted but with 20% of “Illustration Base” from Createx. This additive only works with acrylic paints. Without reducing the adherence of the paint, improves fluidity so the paint can be airbrushed better when we use fine airbrushes of less than 0, 20 mm nozzle.
With a very low pressure and at a short distance, I started focusing on the horizontal lines of the upper fuselage.
[linked image]

The preshading of the horizontal lines is which I was more interested in, as it is directly related to the concept of zenithal light.
I always have been more interested in shading (and preshading) only one side of the lines than in simply shading along the lines. The first one creates a contrast that we can use in the different areas of the model by choosing the direction. Thus we create light maps that highlight specific panels or structures, imitate edges and accentuate angles. The classic preshading only highlights the structural lines.
This can be made using masking tape but, with Medea paint I found a solution applicable in most of the panels: airbrushing the paint without masking and then removing the paint of one side using Medea´s airbrush cleaner.
With brush or bud, Medea´s cleaner removes easily the airbrushed paint no matter the time the paint has dried. Glossy lacquer paint helps to remove Medea acrylic easier and is not affected at all by the cleaner. And thanks to the engraving of the panel lines was very easy to clean without crossing the limits. I did not have a single accident in removing the painting.
Preshading with these products gives a great security because mistakes can be removed in an instant with a rag soaked in cleanser and start again any times that we need.
[linked image]

On the under-surface I was not so interested in the contrast. What I wanted was accentuate the shadows because this zone will be covered with a darker colour.
Here I accentuate the vertical lines which, in a long and narrow fuselage like this, are more important.
[linked image]

In the wings I also used the traditional technique with masks. As they are plane it is much easier.
Although Medea´s paints have a better grip than the airbrush inks and dry to the touch after 15 minutes, a gloss surface is too demanding for them. The masking tape may lift the paint but Post-it cards won´t.
[linked image]

The use of Medea´s cleaner to profile the shading involves the cleaning of a whole panel. For minor corrections I airbrushed Medea´s white.
[linked image]

The final result is not a simple preshading that enhances the panel lines. It also includes panel contrast highlights and zenithal light effect.
The finish is also much more elaborated than typical preshading. That´s because I want all these effects work visually before applying the final white coat that will soften the contrast. After that it will be much harder to retouch the effects. So this is the moment to get the exact gradient, blur and contrast effects that we want.

And this is the current state of the patient.
I liked very much the behaviour of Medea Com.Art paints, I loved the performance of the Infinity airbrush and I also discovered a new application of Medea´s airbrush cleaner. It has been a satisfactory process.
