Basic modelling guide, by Ricardo Rodríguez: F-104 1/72. (CHAPTER 10)

FINAL PAINTING STEPS / PASOS FINALES DE PINTURA

First of all I finished painting the minor elements. I already talked enough about masking tape in the previous module, so I´ll resume in a composition.
I used very dark grey to paint the black elements. That allows me a certain margin to shade, as in the black nose area. I did use pure black only on the lower half of the air intakes.
For the base coat of the wells I used Lara´s steel mixed with Mr.Color´s glossy black.
For diluting Lara´s paint, instead of the thinner recommended by the manufacturer (acetone + alcohol), I tried Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. The paint was diluted and airbrushed perfectly and the finish is smoother. Even better than how it looks in the photo.

DECALS / CALCAS

Decals are not always an easy task. Although they have been with us for a long time, that doesn't mean that they are a refined technology.
Contrary to what may seems, they don´t only require a pair of scissors and water. Their perfect adaptation to the shape of the model requires careful work and patience.
Decals love smooth and glossy painted surfaces. They don´t grab well either on bare plastic or flat paint. It is not a question of what kind of paint or varnish to apply. The matter is to have a smooth surface, whatever the paint used. Of course, glossy paints and varnishes are much smoother than dull ones. A layer of Future over a matt paint before placing de decals works nice because the varnish fills the irregularities of the matt paint, leaving a smoother surface. These irregularities trap air under the decal reducing its adherence and making visible the transparent film so producing the "silvering" effect.
As long as this model is already glossy, I didn´t have to varnish in gloss. That´s an advantage when painting glossy models.
Let's have a look to the necessary stuff. I would say that MicroSet and the MicroSol are essential. I also tested Mr.MarkSofter instead of MicroSol with good results.
The rest of the material is quite basic: water, sharp cutters, a glass pad and a cloth to absorb the water when needed. The important factor is the cleanness.

The starting point of this project was a Superscale decal sheet that someone gave me more than a decade ago. And they already looked old at that time...
The risk with so old decals is that they had become fragile. I keep them in a dry dark place so they had no visible damage.
It is usually preferable to use aftermarket decals. Except for specific models of some manufacturer which decals are of very good quality, the standard mass production kit decals have an excessive thickness, as well as much transparent border. That makes them resistant and easy to handle, but they do not provide the fine finish we are looking for.
In this Superscale sheet, the thinness is acceptable, but they are full of print and shape errors. So I turned to other sources that every modeller should gather: spare decals, generic sheets and transfers.
[linked image]

Let´s start by the transfers. For the civil registration code of my Starfighter (N811NA), the Superscale sheet was of no use because the code corresponds to plane 812. I used white numbers and letters from Archer.
Archer transfers, although nicely made, are almost impossible to transfer to a model surface. I discourage trying to compose words or plates with them because the experience is very frustrating.
Luckily Archer has the solution in the form of his Wet Medium Paper that allows you to transform the transfers in decals.
In first place the transfers are attached to a strip of this Wet Medium Paper with the help of a pencil. Really easy.
[linked image]

Next, I wetted the paper in water and the letters and numbers peeled away same way as decals.
Wet Medium Paper is not virgin decal paper. It's a kind of gummed paper. Transfers don't have the decals´ support film, of course, but Archer´s ones have got a very thin transparent film which remains together the elements of each character.
This does not happen with other brands transfers, which would be disarmed if using this method. For other brands transfers, Archer recommends varnishing once the transfer is attached to the Wet Medium Paper and cut each character before wetting them with water.
[linked image]

Then I place the characters one by one on the model, same as decals. I like to use a brush for transport and placement of decals. To locate them I apply a layer of MicroSet on the surface before placing the decal.
[linked image]

And, as long as the characters of the real plane are not stencil type, I retouched the transfer - decals with white paint.
[linked image]

Other transfers are much easier to dry-attach to the model, as Verlinden´s.
Based on the photos I would say that this F-104 does not have the stencils of operating aircrafts (remember this is a monument, more than a plane). But although in the photos I can´t say whether there are stencils or not, I thought that the small NO STEP lettering of ailerons and flaps would be an interesting touch on such naked wings.
[linked image]

Let´s move to the real decals.
Something important to do if you don´t want the decals look like that is to remove the transparent borders, when possible. That border is something very visible in a finished model and determines a lot in the quality of a finish.
When cutting a decal border the best method is using a metallic ruler and a sharp blade.
We must NOT hold the ruler on the exterior side of the decal because the decal may wrinkle a little on this side.
[linked image]

If we support the ruler on the printed part of the decal, the risk of wrinkle will affect only to the useless transparent film.
[linked image]

The cut doesn't need to be so deep to cut the paper. Just a gentle pressure to pass through the decal; this way the blade´s edge will live longer. The transparent border can be easily removed when we wet de decal.
[linked image]

Whit decals small enough, the ruler is not required. The triangular blade allows to perform incisions by vertical pressure that won´t wrinkle the decals.
[linked image]

The situation changes when the edges are curved. You can use a sharp scissors or a rotary head cutter.
The Craft Swivel Knife from X-Acto has a small blade that can rotate freely under pressure, cutting curves and circles is much easier.
In any case it is always important to cut very slowly and minimizing the transparent border the much as possible but not risking to cut the printed zone. Is preferable a thin transparent border than a mutilated decal.
[linked image]

It is not necessary cutting the inner transparent film, as in the case of these "eights". The only problem with the transparent film is the exterior borders.
Small decals can get wet on a plain surface with a brush. This way you avoid having to fish them into a water pot.
Larger decals are immersed in water a few seconds and then put it to rest until the decal detach from the paper. Immerse them in much water until they detach is counterproductive because they lose adhesion (and are more difficult to catch).
Sometimes decals may curve when the paper wets but that is because of the paper. When placed on a plain surface they recover the shape and incidentally they drain water.
[linked image]

There are so many ways to place decals as modellers so I will only comment the typical steps I follow:
1-I place the drained decal with a brush on the surface dampened with MicroSet and locate in place.
2- I push it with a bud to remove the fluid trapped under the decal. Cotton absorbs the liquid and does not damage the film. You can still move it a little at this stage.
3-When the decal is correctly placed, if there is some relief or panel line under the decal, I wet it with MicroSol and wait for a minute. MicroSol softens the film making it very flexible, but also even more fragile. Then I gently push on the relief with a short bristles brush wet in MicroSol, pushing until the decal adapts to the surface. This can be repeated several times, but always with MicroSol.
4- To get to the bottom of the panel lines, I use a sharpened toothpick. This tool allows to force the decal more than with the brush.
5-After a few minutes the decal will be attached enough to allow us cutting the leftover, if it is the case.
6- I always finish with a layer of MicroSet as if it were a fixative. The MicroSet improves the adhesion of the decals to the paint and neutralizes the effect of the MicroSol. Finally I wait 12 hours so that the chemical reactions end up.
[linked image]

Not all the difficulty is in reliefs. The curved surfaces may also produce adaptation problems for decals.
The NASA logos got a little wrinkled on the borders so I applied MicroSol and let it work.
[linked image]

After that I pushed the softened decal with a clean cloth. This way the decal adapts to the surface without folds.
[linked image]

Once adapted to the surface, you can proceed with the steps above.
Here you can appreciate some printing defects on the decal.
[linked image]

Therefore we must make some retouches with brush and acrylic paint.
I corrected these printing failures and some breaks on the borders that are usual when cutting the transparent film in old decals.
I also painted red the two round panels on top. There were decals for these circles but sometimes is easier to paint than to use the decal.

The yellow band is large enough to shade it like the rest of the aircraft, with Medea´s Blue gray smoke.
As long as over the decal we won´t be able to retouch excessive shading we must be subtle and precise. If there is a mistake you always can erase the paint with Medea´s cleaner but you must begin the shading from scratch.

I also shaded the lower half of the NASA logo and the white plate with Medea´s Blue gray smoke quite subtle.

VARNISHING / BARNIZADO

The varnishing has three major functions:
-Seal and protect the decals. Wherever possible is advisable to apply a layer of varnish over the decals which are a fragile and sensitive material to moisture and light. They eventually may peel away or change their colour if they are not sealed. A layer of varnish also dissimulates the echelon of the decal borders.
-Even the gloss of the different paints and previous effects.
-Protecting the painting for following effects.
In this case it is not necessary the third function because the future steps will not be aggressive for this type of paint.
For this work of varnishing I had to do many tests because I didn´t have much experience in glossy finishes.
If I had gloss varnish from Mr.Color or Tamiya spray, I would have used it. But at that moment I only had Future, Tamiya, Gunze, and several acrylics.
I discarded the acrylics due to the poor behaviour of these paints over very smooth surfaces. Due to the surface tension of water, the paints diluted with water don´t cover uniformly, but form small drops along the surface. The same thing happened with Future, even applying undiluted.
This problem never happens over satin or matt surfaces, in these cases the acrylic paint has enough grip to coat without problem.
Gunze´s Clear takes a long time to dry, much than Tamiya´s.
Tamiya´s Clear diluted with Lacquer Thinner worked fine; I varnished the model and waited 24 hours to cure.
At the last moment someone told me that Future could be diluted with Gaianotes or Tamiya Lacquer Thinner so I tested. It coats perfectly, dries in the same time than water-diluted Future and the finish is glossy and resistant to handling after a few hours.
The result was so good that I applied a layer of Future/Gaianotes 50-50 but only to the aft fuselage to make a comparison with Tamiya´s Clear. There was no visible difference.
During the test process I found a relationship between Gunze aqueous, Tamiya acrylic and Future. The three of them can be diluted with Gaianotes and can be stripped with ammonia.
Anyway, from now I think I´m going to spray the Future diluted with Gaianotes.

There is no application of paint or varnish that is perfect without polishing if we want a smooth glossy finish. So, after letting the varnish to dry for a day I could polish alike both varnishes using sandpaper 8000 and above mainly 12000 grain.
[linked image]

It is hard to appreciate in the photos but the glossy finish of the model is awesome.

To get a nice result painting the panel lines is why I made the panelling effort with the scriber in the assembly phase. The scribing-riveting job and the cleanness in the paint layers lead to this point where we make visible those details with paint.
There are many ways of panelling. I use the pencil, oil paint and washes. I prefer to reserve the pencil for metallic aircraft. Oil paint is the best choice if the finish is matt or slightly satin. But with a smooth finish like this, the simplest and most basic is to use washes.
Weathering Washes from Promodeller are extremely easy to use. First you must shake the bottle very well to stir the product. Next you apply the wash making sure that the lines and rivets are completely coated; there is no need to be very careful as you can see.
On the under-surface I used a dark gray colour (2 parts of “Black” wash and 1 part of “Light Dirt”).
[linked image]

On the upper-surface I used a middle grey (1 part of “black” and 2 parts of “Light dirt”). The point is to enhance the panel lines and rivets but respecting the zenithal illumination. I don´t like panelling with black a whole model unless it is a very dark one.
[linked image]

These washes dry pretty fast. As soon as the product looks matt you can remove it with a cloth slightly wet with water. This way the paint only stays on the engraved details.
[linked image]

Promodeller´s washes are very easy to use and save lot of time, but never provide a perfect finish. There may be some areas where the product doesn´t want to mark the lines or where the finish is not intense enough.
So after applying the washes you can do some retouches with oil paint, but on this occasion as long as I just discovered the virtues of the Medea´s cleaner, I used opaque acrylics from Medea Com.Art to highlight and retouch.
[linked image]

Over the blue stripe I panelled with black.
[linked image]

On such a glossy surface Com.Art acrylic can be removed with water as easily as Promodeller´s washes if you don´t wait more than 5 minutes.
[linked image]

If you wait more time you can use Medea´s airbrush cleaner instead of water.
[linked image]

Panelling a model like this requires some patience and a couple of afternoon work, whatever the method used. I also spent a number of retouching and cotton buds.
The matt finish of the panel lines and rivets is correct so we don´t need to varnish any more. Glossy panel lines will look pretty weird.
[linked image]

And this is the definitive look of the painting. I won´t add any other effect. The concept of basic painting reaches right here: base paint, lighting, decals, panelling and finish are common to the painting of any aircraft. Although the continuous polishing of the paint to get such a smooth finish is only necessary to get a glossy look like this.
Everything else is particular to each project as there are dozens (literally) of weathering techniques to give more realism to each model.
This is the most realistic finish possible for this project. It is a monument-plane carefully repainted before its display. Even they have painted white some panels that are in other colours or unpainted in the operational F-104Ns.
Of course the model has yet to change when all of its elements and minor details will be added... in the next chapter.
