Basic modelling guide, by Ricardo Rodríguez: F-104 1/72. (CHAPTER 7)

CLOSING THE COCKPIT / CERRANDO LA CABINA:

Time to talk about the bloody transparent pieces. Those pieces that appear at the end of the instructions to spoil the fun with their fragility. When we work them well they are invisible but when we don´t, everybody notices.
The canopy of the single-seat Starfighter is composed of three sections, two of them fixed. The pieces of my kit were quite fine and had no cracks, otherwise it would be better to start looking for a replacement.
The first thing to do with a transparent piece is to examine the surface looking for scratches, the Optivisor is very useful here. To make it easier we can clean them before with a cotton cloth and glass cleaner. Although I didn´t find scratches, there were some scuff marks here and there, and anyway, transparency can always be improved.
[linked image]

The small scuff marks that I want to eliminate must be sanded. I sanded the pieces with an abrasive foam used for metal polishing. It is a sponge that removes rust and stains by rubbing. It has a grain of about 4000 and is very flexible so it comes in handy for sanding such curved pieces. You can also use sponge sandpaper, of course.
[linked image]

With the pieces sanded with this fine grain we can jump into polishing. The best polishing stuff are the "compounds". The applying of polishing compounds needs of an electric mini-drill that can rotate at low revolutions. For any modeller, the mini-drill is a necessary tool, at least to polishing clear parts.
For working the narrow inner side I use a cotton bud as polishing tool. You must  push softly.
[linked image]

And for the outer side I use the soft fabric tool. It doesn´t matter if we apply the compound on the tool or on the piece, the important thing is not to be splashed with the particles of compound that will be ejected.
It is also important to firmly hold the piece with the other hand. I used the Pick&Place tool to hold the piece when taking the photographs but when polishing you need your hands.
If we use low revolutions on the mini-drill there will be no risk that the friction causes a plastic melting, and the result will be even more crystal than the original.
[linked image]

I found that the fitting of these pieces was very good. Having in mind that the model would have the canopy down and the cockpit locked, the best decision is to finish the cockpit interior and glue the clear parts before painting the fuselage.
If you want the canopy opened in your model, you must mask and paint the canopy piece apart and glue it when the model is finished.
[linked image]

I held the pieces in place with masking tape and applied thin cement with a fine brush to join the three clear parts. This way I get a very strong attachment. The brush that comes in the cement cans does not have a very fine tip, and in this case the application must be very accurate not to smear the pieces and very controlled not to glue the pieces to the fuselage yet.
[linked image]

And by the way, an advice about masking tapes. One of the greatest assets of any masking tape is its straight edge. But if we do not protect the tapes once removed from its wrapping, the adhesive edges will attract dust, fibers and dirt which will spoil the effect of the mask when painting. The dirt will be transferred to the paint.
Therefore you must store the tape in clean boxes and open it only to cut the section needed.
[linked image]

Polishing with normal compound is pretty good but can be improved with finer types. I used Mr.Hobby´s fine compound. Tamiya also has a finish compound. The result is clearly better. The second polishing also eliminates possible traces of cement.
[linked image]

A great help to accelerate the construction of an airplane model are the pre-cut adhesive masks. Eduard´s are my favorite.
The first step is to detach them from the support, for which I use the tip of a well sharpened knife to lift a corner.
[linked image]

I use a fine tip tweezers to remove the mask and manipulate it. The correct positioning is usually based on placing perfectly the first contact point. But we can always make corrections because this material accepts being taken off and repositioned multiple times.
I finish the masking with suitable pieces of leftover material from the same sheet of masks.
I also masked the inner side to prevent possible staining with the airbrush sprayed paint.
[linked image]

As the clear pieces are quite curved there is inevitable to make some adjustment when fitting the mask that produces some wrinkle or fold. That is not a problem, the important thing is that the borders are perfectly in place.
Other method to mask is to use thin stripes of masking tape to mask the borders and then use bigger sections of tape to fill the interior zone. This is slower but you get a better adjustment of the masks.
[linked image]

As the cockpit will be closed there is no need to paint the inner canopy frame. You only need to apply a first coat of light gray which will be the color you see on the inner side. I used Gunze paint diluted with Tamiya´s Laquer Thinner.
[linked image]

Next I sprayed the color of the black rubber borders with Gunze flat black and the same previous solvent. Lacquer paint is very resistant to rubbing and behaves acceptably when removing the masks. In general, the glossy colors and vinyl-acrylic paints tear in an irregular border when removing the adhesive masks. The best way to prevent this is to spray very thin layers.
[linked image]

I glued the last photo-etched pieces of the cockpit with Gator´s grip. The Pick&Place tool is very useful to handle these pieces.
[linked image]

I masked the inner cockpit and the borders to paint these zones.
[linked image]

I painted the rear zone of the cockpit with the same mixture of grey, black and blue that I have used in all interior elements. The upper zone of the dashboard is covered with a green canvas.
[linked image]

I got some shades with black oil paint and some lights on the raised zones. I also applied a blue acrylic filter to the round HUD projector.
The inner edges of the cockpit are wider than the thickness of the clear parts, so I painted dark grey the inner half so that the glue works when attaching the canopy piece.
[linked image]

The HUD projector will improve if we make an authentic transparent lens.
Over the smooth side of a polypropylene cap, I deposited small droplets of transparent CA with a toothpick, the most circular possible and with different sizes.
[linked image]

When the CA has hardened with the cap upside down (so that no dust adheres and gravity gives a more curved shape to the droplets), I carefully bended the plastic so that the droplets remove easily. Now you only need to choose the most suitable.
[linked image]

With the lens in place and the HUD screen from the Eduard´s photo-etched set glued with Gator´s Grip, I really like the result.
[linked image]

I chose not to make further detailing on the cockpit, but there is a piece which is the most noticeable part of the inner canopy structure. I preferred to attach it to the seat rather than to the canopy, the final result will be the same.
Of course you must check the correct fitting of the pieces before gluing them in place.
[linked image]

And while doing all this, the canopy paint had enough time to dry well so I removed the first mask. This paper leaves very little residue, but if there is still some, can be easily removed with soft touches of adhesive paper.
[linked image]

After a final cleaning with glass cleaner I again checked the fitting, contact areas, interior painting and clear parts cleanness. The painted canopy frames are not perfect (as usually) so they will need some retouch with brush when the fuselage painting will be finished.
Remember that Tamiya´s Laquer Thinner is perfect for cleaning paint stains on the clear parts, it eliminates any paint spots without affecting the plastic.
[linked image]

Now I mask the canopy with a new set of adhesive masks but overlapping a thin black border of the canopy frames. This way we will get a black border that imitates the rubber sealer that profiles the canopy frames. Of course, the inner side of the canopy is not masked.
[linked image]

It is easier to paint the rearview mirrors before placing them on the inner side of the canopy frame.

I glued them with Gator´s Grip diluted with water and applied with a fine brush. When they fixed in place some paint retouches can be made.
[linked image]

Finally I glued the canopy in place with thin cement. There is no need to press the pieces this time. The thin cement will get a strong enough welding.
[linked image]

NAVIGATION LIGHTS / LUCES DE POSICIÓN:

Depending on each model, sometimes is better to solve the matter of the navigation lights before the main painting phase.
Hasegawa´s lights are useless. They are undersized and the mould lines are very hard to clean. There is no problem because there are many ways to make these small lights.
For placing the side lights I drilled the fuselage completely. On the spine light, I only opened a hole but didn´t pierce completely the plastic.
[linked image]

The two side lights were made with clear stretched sprue. When stretching the sprue we must use the flame just for heating the plastic not close enough to burn it. From each stretched rod we can cut two slightly conic sections from the extremes, which will function as bottle stoppers in the holes we pierced before.
[linked image]

The four rear lights were first painted with a silver marker.

The upper rear lights were painted with clear red over the silver color. Next I filled all the light holes with clear CA except for the two side lights where I glued the clear stretched sprue stoppers with thin cement.
The CA must be applied free of bubbles. We also must apply an excess of CA because it will shrink a little when harden. To avoid deformations, it is advisable not to use the CA accelerator directly on the CA, although we can put aside a piece of paper impregnated with accelerator, as vapors also accelerate the hardening of the CA.
[linked image]

Once the CA has hardened, we only have to sand and polish with 1500 to 12000 grain sandpaper. This way we get a perfect navigation lights. The side lights must be painted red and blue, but that will be after the fuselage painting.
[linked image]

And finally we must mask the clear circles. I used Eduard´s circle masks; they are not the perfect solution because the edges are a little irregular but they are good enough.
[linked image]

The main assembly is completed. From now, we must handle the model thinking in the main painting phase:
-First thing is to clean it with glass cleaner to eliminate any residue due to the hand manipulation. Not all glass cleaners work equally well. I use the ones based on ammonia which are usually transparent. Those based in alcohols are usually blue or green and clean just as well, but may interact negatively with some paintings.
-The model must not be touched with the bare hands any more. I use vinyl gloves that I like more than the latex ones. I only use glove on the left hand, which I use to hold the model. Of course we cannot use the gloved hand to touch any dirty surface or even our own face, this will transfer the grease or dirt to the model.
-And the model will only rest on a foam piece not to damage the painted surfaces.
[linked image]

And finally the model is ready for the main painting phase…in the next chapter.
