Basic modelling guide, by Ricardo Rodríguez: F-104 1/72. (CHAPTER 6)

FUSELAGE ASSEMBLY / MONTAJE DEL FUSELAJE:

I decided to begin by gluing the wings to the fuselage halves. It is not the most usual or advisable method in most models, but I wanted to get a very firm and precise joint, and the wings are exceptionally small, so I considered that they would not be a great obstacle once welded.
The first problem is the wing´s dihedral angle, in the F-104 is nothing less than -10 °. The model does not help to get this angle, so I managed on my own. First I drew in a paper the inclination of the wing with respect to the axis of the aircraft and marked with pencil in el fuselage the wing´s insertion line.
[linked image]

Next I placed the piece on the paper with the help of a block of EPS, inserted the wing and applied the thin cement. Using the drawing as a visual reference I arranged the wing with the proper inclination and waited for the welding to dry.
[linked image]

When I want to get a strong welding with the thin cement I press the pieces when the plastic is still soft, until it appears a little of melted plastic along the joint line. That means that the welding has the maximum surface possible. In any case, this excess of plastic once hardened can be easily sanded.
The line between wing and fuselage also must be engraved as other panel line more, this time I used mini-saws. You must be careful not to engrave too much these lines because this will weaken the joint. The slats of leading edge must be separated from the fuselage, piece of cake for the mini-saws.
[linked image]

With the wings placed, I enforced the inner side of the joint with epoxy putty, Tamiya quick type works perfect. This reinforcement will also prevent changes in the dihedral angle.
[linked image]

The cockpit sides lack of any relief or detail. In addition, the plastic was very rough and pitted. I forgot all detailing and I just sanded the surface to make it smooth. The fiberglass pencil works equally well on plastic or black CA.
[linked image]

I airbrushed the walls with the same mixture used in the rest of the cockpit. I also painted black the inner side of the air intakes just in case something could be seen from the exterior, although I doubt it. Of course I avoided painting the joint surfaces.
[linked image]

Before closing a fuselage we must not forget any of the internal elements. When we forget something and found it with the model already assembled, the feeling of being an idiot is terrible.
You always must check the correct fitting of these elements and make sure that everything fits properly before even touching the glue. It is not uncommon that the instructions are wrong or the pieces are not exactly perfect.
I have the habit of gluing these elements to the right side of the fuselage and do not bother to apply adhesive to join them on the left side when closing the fuselage.
[linked image]

To close the aft section I started to make a point of support by joining the two pieces along the surface of the tail fin. To join pieces that have a large contact surface we can use the classic styrene glue. It gives us more time to join and adjust the position of the pieces. It should be applied on both sides.
[linked image]

But closing models is the work for which the thin cements were invented for. Even holding the pieces well united, the liquid cement penetrates by any slit without problem.
[linked image]

The cement evaporates quickly but before it melts the plastic surface. Having both pieces in contact the melted plastic of both pieces is interspersed and once dry the effect is of a plastic welding. They are very resistant joints but with the condition to maintain pressed the pieces without making corrections for at least 4 hours. Therefore the perfect placement of the pieces trying to match all lines of panels before you apply the glue is essential.
[linked image]

After at least 4 hours the welding is stable and can be sanded.
As I have said is a priority the good alignment of the panels and also the edges. The burrs of melted plastic can be scraped, filed and sanded, and in many places we will find an invisible joint line that will not need putty.
[linked image]

I had to carve a bevel on the visor of the instrument panel because the pieces did not match well.
[linked image]

Anyway, no cement joint is perfect so we will need to apply some putty. There may be three reasons to putty a joint line:
1 - Unlevelling. One side of the joint is higher than the other. This type of defect is usually due to both pieces so is advisable to sand a little the higher side and then putty the union to level the lower side.
2 - Typical sprue connector marks. If the borders of the pieces were a little rounded due to the previous filing when we eliminated the sprue connectors it is not surprising that these points require putty.
3 - Holes. Planned for insert some piece as antennas, pylons, etc. They only require a little more CA than the second case. They are more difficult to repair with grey putty.
[linked image]

Before applying the filler we must sand the surface to detect the points where is necessary to apply putty.
[linked image]

We must also perform the tasks that may require corrections before puttying. Scribing panel lines or in this case to deepen a little some rivet holes are processes that usually need some later puttying, so we save steps and time by rationally distributing the work.

It is not uncommon that where joints involve more than two pieces there are fitting problems as this hole in the main gear well.
[linked image]

As I have mentioned in previous chapters I use black CA and accelerator for puttying.
[linked image]

The front wheel well needed a broad puttying but is not an easy thing to sand inside. The solution is to cover the joints with thin styrene sheet. In this case I used 0.13mm sheet from Evergreen. This sheet is very fine so it may be melted if you use much Thin cement. It is safer to use the classic dense styrene cement applied with a fine brush. You can clean the brush with acetone.
[linked image]

The hole in the main well needs some filing before sanding. When filing the borders were leveled, with the model finished this modification won´t be noticed.
[linked image]

After eliminate much of the CA with files it is time for the water-sanding, as we saw in previous chapters. After using the 1000 grain sandpaper I stop to check the finish.
The surface must be analyzed very closely with a grazing light to enhance the shadows of every small defect. We can detect small scratches or undulations that need more putty or sanding.
I use to be very obsessive with this process, repeating up to 5 times the puttying of some point.
Sometimes it is worthy to repeat the checking of the surface a day later to detect possible contractions of the putty, especially if you use grey putty instead of CA.
[linked image]

Before assemble the two halves of the fuselage, I glued the air intakes to the front half because these elements require much effort to get a correct welding and this way is easier to apply the pressure while the thin cement works.
This decision created some fitting problems as you will see in the next picture but it gives me the opportunity to show how to fix a mayor fitting problem.
[linked image]

Convinced of having perfectly stuck air intakes, I proceeded to unite the two halves of the fuselage and, unexpectedly though unsurprisingly, I found serious problems.
First, a gap between the air intakes and the rear fuselage. I filled it with styrene sheet of the proper thickness.
[linked image]

The second problem is more serious. The echelon on both sides is notable and requires a reduction of the plastic thickness for more than 50% at some points.
The perfect fitting is impossible in this point, if I had assembled the fuselage halves before gluing the air intakes there would have been gaps to fill anyway.
[linked image]

There is a nice reason to have 500 grain sandpaper in stock.
I preserved the sensible leading edges of the wings with thick masking, and reduced the problem with sandpaper and considerably effort. I focused in not extending the sanding outside the affected area.
[linked image]

Then I puttied the reduced unevenness to continue with fine sandpaper.
At the last minute I decided to remove the line that surrounds the spine. It was very irregular and in my opinion, needless. It is always preferable not to have a panel line than having a bad one.
[linked image]

Reducing the echelon is not the only problem. We also must create the contour of the fuselage and the smooth curvature characteristic of this area. The CA along with the accelerator, as any other putty, allows us to create volumes where necessary.
[linked image]

This was a job that required several repetitions of the process of puttying and sanding. In a large area the recess of plastic exceeded the depth of the panel lines. To avoid that the lines completely disappear it is advisable to re-mark the lines when they lose definition, giving them more depth before further sanding.
[linked image]

The final result was very good, even better than I expected, which partly recompense the work done.
[linked image]

Once the hard work of sanding is completed, we can pay attention to sensitive and fragile areas. This model is designed so that the piece of the pitot probe completes the nose cone. As the plastic pitot probe is neither tough, nor thin, nor cylindric enough, I cut it and drilled the nose to insert a 0.6mm thick hypodermic needle.
I completed the shape of the cone with black CA. This section of the pitot probe should be 12mm long and slightly slanted downwards. Another subtle but distinctive feature of F-104s.
[linked image]

In the tail, I added a small triangular piece needed to place the stabilizer completely down.
A trick to save some work in the area of the engine is simply not to put engine. A plastic stopper is enough to place the nozzle. It is not glued yet, just checking the correct fitting.
[linked image]

For cutting a plastic disk of this diameter, the appropriate tool is the compass cutter. I use this cutter in the normal way to cut paper, but for styrene, it works much better turning it counter-edge, acting as a scriber. This way we get a neat and thicker groove without the risk that the blade gets out of the groove.
[linked image]

Finally I polished the surface with the MicroMesh fabric sandpapers that give the best base for the use of shiny or metallic paints and reveal any small imperfection. At last, the surface is ready for painting.

Basic modelling guide, by Ricardo Rodríguez: F-104 1/72. (CHAPTER 5)

LANDING GEAR / TREN DE ATERRIZAJE:

There is nothing trivial in the cleaning and sanding of these pieces, especially in 1/72. Scraping can easily break most delicate parts or damage the geometry of thin rods.
In first place you have to putty and sand some circular mould marks. These marks are the worst plague of the wheel wells of any model.
To lower the dry cyanoacrylate I scrape with the curved blade, but in this kind of parts we are often constrained by the surrounding relief and narrow space. In these conditions it is useful to have smaller curved blades. Scalpel blades #15 are excellent pieces of steel that are available in pharmacies in packs of 100.
[linked image]

The worst possible mould marks are placed on the tires. In these cases the sponge sandpaper is very useful. I always like to have a clear separation between tire and rim to ease the painting, if the piece don´t provide it we can engrave the line with a puncher and make the tire curvature with the curved blade.
[linked image]

Rarely all mould marks in a landing gear will be accessible to the sandpaper. In the hollows where this happens we can use the fibreglass pen. The 2mm pen allows working the zones where the usual 4mm pen would not fit.
[linked image]

Actually the F-104 well doors look "fat" due to its internal structure. Anyway, it is convenient to sharpen the edges of the doors by scraping with a blade. I also make holes for the wiring installation. I consider it imperative to have attachment points for the wiring, since I'm not very skilled with cables. At least one drill to fix an end and work from that support.
[linked image]

To imitate wiring and pipes there are three classic materials, cheap and easy to find: insulated electric cable, thin wire and stretched sprue. In the case of insulated cable is so useful internal copper wire as the case itself. The fine wires are available in different metals as well as different thicknesses. If we get copper wire from an electric motor coil we must remember that the thread will be protected with a coat of lacquer that can be eliminated with fire (please, with caution). We can also soften the wires heating them with a lighter.
Concerning stretched sprue, is advisable to have prepared a "collection" of diverse sizes and colours. A colour that contrasts with the model will allow us to better see the work we are doing.
[linked image]

The model´s landing gear have the same important role which they have in real planes: supporting the weight above them. Some models are notorious for the fragility of their undercarriage. For me it is essential to strengthen the weak points of the landing gear as my models often have to endure a trip by air and road heading to some expo.
Here comes the first use of metal in the landing gear, reinforcing joint points with wire (in this case brass) inserted into the plastic. Sometimes I completely replace actuators or dampers with metal, usually steel needle, this way there is no need to paint it later.
I always file the wheels to make a plain zone and drill it to insert a metal rod that secure the model to the base or stand. But the rod is inserted only at the last minute. Until then I use the holes to hold the wheels when painting. The plain zones of the wheels are not only realistic but also contribute to a better fixation.
[linked image]

Stretched sprue is a rigid and brittle material, but we can easily increase its elasticity if you slip repeatedly against a circular metal bar, rubbing all sides and gradually increasing the angle of flexion. The resulting material is remarkably plastic, with an elasticity characteristic that differentiates it from the wires.
[linked image]

And perhaps the biggest advantage of using stretched sprue is the ease of gluing to the kit pieces, as long as they are also from styrene.
Most of the landing gear detailing is solved with segments of stretched sprue, rods, squares and thin strips from our “cuts and ends” box or in assorted sets.
[linked image]

The plastic sheath of the insulated cable is hollow and that has its value. Remove it without deforming the material is a little tricky because it is very delicate.
[linked image]

The combination of sheath segments with wires can easily imitate small actuators as the ones in the front wheel doors. I do it primarily to have a point of support when it comes time to attach the doors to the fuselage. Comparing these pieces with the corresponding parts of his 1/48 brother we found they are in very different detail levels. Using the 1/48 piece as a reference I filed the contact edge with a half-round file to improve the fitting.
[linked image]

If we don´t get insulating sheath of the desired diameter, we can make thin plastic tubes stretching the tubes of the cotton buds. They remain hollow after stretching. Of course, to get a cylindrical segment of a precise diameter will take time and luck.
[linked image]

If we get into the modelling specific materials, the lead wire is very useful. Available in a variety of thicknesses is an extremely flexible material. It is a great help in some cases but not always.
[linked image]

But, like all good modelling materials, we can find more uses if we transform it. Thanks to its extreme malleability we can flatten it with a roller producing thin, flexible strips.
[linked image]

In the main gear wiring I used 0.2 mm lead wire, strips made from the same wire and stretched hollow rod connectors. To simulate clamps I previously deposited small drops of black CA on the lead wire. I glued metal with plastic with Gator´s Grip.
[linked image]

So far, the detailing of my F-104 landing gear, limited to the more visible elements.
Even after the wiring, we can find a screw or bolt head to be added to enhance the look of the piece. Plastic slices produced by tools such as "punch and die" are very useful. I've never bought one of these expensive tools, so I collect a stock of circles whenever someone lends me one. The rest of the time I use slices from styrene rods.

The other option for imitate screws and bolt heads is to use metal. There are flat circles and hexagons in photo-etched sheets but they are very thin compared with what we can do with a "punch and die". If we want curved pieces my favourite is to make them from tin foil with the "Nutter". It is also an expensive tool but it saves a lot of time. The cheap and slow method for curved bolt heads is to round a rod´s end with sandpaper and cut it with a blade.
To glue these tiny metallic rivets and nuts I have always used Future as an adhesive. You first must to apply it below the piece and then, after locate the nut in place a new application of Future above the nut.
In the extensor arm of the front landing gear I drilled the small holes with a fine drill. The headlight, against what the instructions say, is attached to the leg, not to one of the doors. You can locate a mark on the plastic where we drill and insert a rod to which we must attach the transparent part of the headlight.

In preparation for the painting I masked the most important junction points using tape, blue-tack, and bits of toothpicks for the holes. I hate to have conflicts between paint and glue.

The smaller the model, the finer the metallic paint pigment must be. In this scale we must used fine metallic paints as Alclad or similar. Due to this piece will be under the plane and so, very dark, I painted the base coat with steel colour instead of aluminium, I only used aluminium to add some lights. Finally I added some shadows with a mix of steel and gloss black.

Well, the trick of painting landing gear is not in the use of the airbrush, but profiling. And there is always much to profile. My standard method of profiling is the diluted oil paint. On smooth surfaces and satin or gloss finish flows easily from the brush to the relief of the pieces. If we carefully apply it around the details, not in a massive wash, the task of cleaning the possible irregular borders with clean solvent and a brush is much faster.
It is important to clean the borders as soon as possible because if the oil dries for hours, it becomes brittle and the finish won´t be neat.

Many people profile by other techniques. One of them is acrylic. For me the acrylic paint for profiling lacks certain virtues of oil paint, as the ability to be cleaned without danger or blend the edges. But it produces more regular and solid lines and in certain cases may be more suitable. The best acrylic paint I have tried so far to outline the details is the transparent range of Medea Com.Art. Its transparency reduces the hard edges and can be corrected with a toothpick in the first 15 minutes. It also has low surface tension.

The rims don´t have border problems so may be easily profiled with a wash of Tamiya Smoke. Tamiya transparent paints have always had a great affinity with metallic paints. As I diluted it with water I needed three applications to get the final effect.

I used Vallejo acrylics to paint small details related to the wiring. Vallejo is the best paint for small opaque applications with brush.

With the traditional technique of painting the tires with diluted paint we do not need to mask the rims. If you have a deep edge is easier to keep the paint on the tyre and not stain the rim. I always mix black or dark gray with at least 25% of burnt umber to make my "tyre colour". On this occasion, as usual, it took 4 applications. It is important to let each layer dry at least for an hour.

Finally I airbrushed a lighter tone of the base tyre colour from above to get a zenithal light effect. Masking is not necessary.

The touch of colour and contrast is added with the small decal signs.

The F-104´s landing gear doesn´t seem to be in natural metal but painted in antioxidant aluminium. Perhaps the rims are in bare metal.
To remove some metallic sheen to the paint I varnished with a mixture of 50% satin and matte varnish from Vallejo Model Air.

Finally I retired the masking of the junction points and headlights and painted the bare metal oleo-pneumatic actuators. To achieve a high brightness metallic finish, I always use metallic marker paint diluted with Humbrol thinner. There are silver, gold and copper markers. It is not a resistant paint so is used only for specific details where there will be no friction.

Of course everything is unassembled because the landing gear is one of the last things that are installed in an aircraft, when it will be already painted.
I have not painted yet the wheel wells because I have decided it is better to do it after painting the exterior.
